Work Day and Expectations

For me, today’s work day was a perfect day for this simple reminder…

You ought to be glad for the troubles on your job because they provide about half your income. If it were not for the things that go wrong, the difficult people with whom you deal, and the problems of your working day, someone could be found to handle your job for half of what you are being paid. ~ Robert Updegraff

Sometimes it’s super easy to forget that the struggles you find yourself in, throughout your work day, is exactly what you’re being paid to solve. These struggles take on multiple forms: hard problems, endless employee/colleague questions, challenges, debates on the team’sĀ future roadmap, clientele relationships, vendor communications, and so on.

If your boss (or company) could find an easy solution to all of these things, they would. And then you’d be out of a job.

Enjoy the difficulties. Embrace the problems. Commit to never ending improvement.

Reflect on the fact that this process is the work.

Take heart in the fact that the work we find ourselves doing at our jobs today will be different in 1, 5, 10, 20+ years from now.
